Implicate and explicate order

The implicate and explicate order is a theoretical framework developed by physicist David Bohm to describe the fundamental nature of reality. The explicate order refers to the unfolded, manifest realm of ordinary experience—the world of separate objects, distinct events, and measurable phenomena that we perceive through our senses. In contrast, the implicate (or enfolded) order represents a deeper, hidden dimension where everything is interconnected and undivided, with all aspects of reality enfolded within each part, much like a hologram contains the whole image in each fragment.

Bohm proposed that the explicate order emerges from and is sustained by the implicate order, suggesting that what we perceive as separate entities are actually projections or unfoldments from an underlying unified field. This radical reconceptualization challenges the conventional mechanistic worldview that treats the universe as composed of fundamentally separate parts interacting through external forces. Instead, Bohm's framework implies that separation is illusory and that wholeness is primary. The significance of this concept extends beyond physics into philosophy, consciousness studies, and ontology. It offers a bridge between quantum mechanics and our everyday experience, potentially resolving paradoxes like quantum entanglement by positing that particles are not truly separate but connected through the implicate order. Furthermore, it has influenced discussions about the relationship between mind and matter, suggesting that consciousness itself may participate in both orders, with thoughts emerging from and returning to an implicate domain of meaning and potentiality.

Applications
  • Quantum physics and interpretations of quantum mechanics
  • Philosophy of science and ontology
  • Consciousness studies and theories of mind
  • Holographic theories of the universe
  • Systems theory and holistic approaches to understanding complexity
  • Theoretical biology and morphogenesis
Speculations
  • Organizational management: viewing corporate culture as the implicate order from which individual behaviors (explicate) emerge, suggesting transformation requires shifting the deeper cultural substrate rather than surface-level policies
  • Creative writing: treating characters' unconscious motivations and archetypal patterns as the implicate order, with dialogue and actions as explicate manifestations, allowing writers to develop more psychologically coherent narratives
  • Urban planning: conceptualizing the invisible social networks, historical memory, and shared values of a community as implicate order, with physical infrastructure and architecture as explicate expressions that should honor these hidden dimensions
  • Personal psychology: understanding habitual patterns and automatic reactions as explicate order arising from implicate beliefs and traumas, with therapeutic work focused on accessing and transforming the enfolded psychological substrate
  • Music composition: treating silence and harmonic potential as implicate order from which melodies and rhythms unfold, creating compositions that emphasize the return to and emergence from sonic possibility
  • Culinary arts: viewing traditional recipes and cooking techniques as explicate manifestations of implicate cultural wisdom, terroir, and ancestral knowledge embedded in foodways
  • Social media dynamics: interpreting viral trends as explicate unfoldments of implicate collective anxieties, desires, and cultural undercurrents invisible until they surface
